Description

This is not really a tutorial, just a step by step process :p. I’ve learned a lot from seeing other artists’ processes and I’m still learning! Feedback is welcome.

I start by keeping things very organized... This usually means I work on several layers to avoid having to redo something, messing up colors, details, etc. And if it gets too confusing, I group similar layers: for example the hair layers on Rihanna were grouped together in a folder—NOT merged—and I locked each layer (so I didn’t accidently paint in them) then closed the folder when I didn’t need it.

With the actual painting, I start off with a basic sketch (on its own layer, which stays on top until I’m satisfied). Then I select colors (my palette is also on its own layer). I then put down what looks to be a mid-tone before loosely adding darker tones and highlights. That applies to everything, including hair and nails. I don’t commit until I’m absolutely comfortable to move onto details; even then I still allow myself to get rid of something if it’s not working or if it looks off. Also, I tend to zoom out at least 50% of the time or flip the image so that my eye does not get comfortable and misses something (meaning I avoid working only on one area from sketch to refined detail then moving to another). I make sure I work overall until each area has a good amount of work done--no favoritism--then move onto another level of detail.

I hope I explained it well enough, but you can ask me to clarify anything if need be. You can see the finished image here: [link]
